Trade Event at London's Olympia Exhibition Centre

Amy and Amanda visited the very exciting trade event last weekend at London's Olympia exhibition centre. They saw some of the most beautiful gowns that are up and coming for the next season of bridal wear. Here's a snap shot of what they found...

Lace is still a huge trend in bridal but we are finding customers are also asking for something a bit different. The designers from our suppliers are listening to our customer requests and are introducing the most amazing dresses - unique lines, sleeker, cleaner, finishes. Lace is still there, but so is satin, organza and Mikado. Ivory is still huge as a colour, but we are also seeing blues, oyster and champagne still huge this year! We will get getting our new dresses in the summer, so keep your eyes pealed for these hot new arrivals! We've also given our bridesmaid collection a complete overhaul...We can't wait to share these news, but we won't give away too much for now! Next we need to clear our samples to make way for the new. SO on Wednesday 16th March at 5pm there will be the most amazing sale event! No appointments; try one dress at a time; find your dream dress and make us an offer on the price!

It's been an amazing week at Amica Bridal Boutique...

The Ladybird launch was phenomenal - we are so glad you love this new collection as much as we do! We have a feel there will be a lot more to see from this designer across 2016 and beyond.

It was also so lovely to see so many newly engaged couples at the Wedding Extravaganza in Plymouth's Guildhall on Sunday. We look forward to meeting you in the Boutique soon! We now look forward to prom season, starting with the Oceana Prom Fayre this coming Sunday. We've teamed up with Mist Me Today Spray Tanning and will be offering a FREE spray tan with every prom dress order at this event! See you there x

Happy New Year!

We've got so much to look forward to over the next few weeks... and months ahead! Firstly, we are so happy to be launching the new Ladybird collection at Amica Bridal Boutique! This new collection offers a wide price range - from £350 to £1500 (and everything in between!), as well as a plus size collection, faster deliveries and absolutely gorgeous styles! We just can't wait to show you!! Be among the first in the region to order your dress, and we will give you 15% off! Come along to the launch event on 22nd, 23rd or 24th January. Call for details on 01752 214040.

Look out for further events at the Boutique, including a 'plus size night', prom event and more designer weekends....Check out our events page for dates. x

Disney Photo Shoot

Disney wedding dress photo shoot

We’ve had the pleasure of working with some fantastic companies these last two weeks to bring you images of our beautiful gowns. Soon we’ll be able to reveal the stunning images by Jane Austin of Romance Photography and Steve Fry of Frytography.

The first shoot will present our unique official Disney Fairy Tale bridal gowns - Elsa and Cinderella. We worked with the fantastic company Upon a Wish to recreate some Disney inspired magic to model these absolutely magical dresses. The shoot took place in the stunning setting of Kitley House. The weather prevented an outside shoot and as a result we will only be able to show you the house interior – but what an interior! Their breath-taking staircase is perfect for brides to cascade down as they make their grand entrance to walk down the aisle.

As Upon a Wish’s Cinderella entered the room we were instantly drawn in by her magical character and of course the look! Hair and accessories positioned to perfection by her personal hairdresser, Jacci, and makeup by the very talented Katy Short. As we dressed the ‘princess’ in the official Alfred Angelo Disney Fairy Tale Cinderella dress the entire look just came to life…WOW!

Jane Austin of Romance Photography is use to creating magic in her images (as she creates ‘magical makeovers’ as part of her portfolio) and from the first click of the camera we were blown away by her work. The magic of Disney was recreated!!

You can come and try the beautiful Cinderella dress at Amica Bridal Boutique. This dress is available in ‘Glass Slipper Blue’, white or ivory and in size 6-30. You can also order a matching flower girl dresses from the Disney Royal Blossom collection. You just can’t get more fairy tale that that! Or can you…?

We then couldn’t believe our eyes when we met Upon A Wish’s Ice Queen! She was prepped and preened by the Fairy God Mother, Jacci – the iconic plaited hair positioned to perfection and wonderful icy makeup by Kay Short. POOF… the magic wand was waved and the Ice Queen was there - wearing the glittering magic of the official Alfred Angelo Disney Elsa wedding dress. Gorgeous, fabulous images, shot by the brilliant Jane Austin, brought this whole look together. Great fun, magic and something YOU can recreate on your wedding day!

You can come and try the iconic Elsa dress at Amica Bridal Boutique. Available in Ice Blue, white or ivory and in size 6-30. Again any little ladies in your life can wear a matching flower girl dress from the cute and beautiful Disney Royal Blossom collection. Your wedding day will certainly be an event you, and your guests, will never forget.

As the only stockist in the South West of this unique collection, you’ll enjoy trying Snow White, Tiana, Belle, Sleeping Beauty, Ariel, Rapunzel and Jasmine too! Give us a call to make an appointment and mention the Disney shoot to us when you call – 01752 214040.

Charity Auction Night at Amica

Laura Plane's story

On Weds 13th Aug at 7pm we're hosting a charity auction night where lots of beautiful wedding gowns will be sold at ridiculously low prices...and 100% of proceeds will go to the breast cancer charity CoppaFeel! BUT did you know why?

Friend of Amica Bridal Boutique, Laura Plane (pictured) was diagnosed with breast cancer at the very young age of 28. After a double mastectomy, reconstruction surgery, chemo and radiotherapy Laura really had been through the mill. Then earlier this year, at the age of 34, doctors discovered cancer in her spine and ribs and secondary cancer was diagnosed. Although Laura's cancer is incurable, it won't beat her and has even inspired her!

As well as working as a teacher, Laura volunteers as a CoppaFeel 'Boobette', raising awareness of breast cancer in young people and teaching them how to check themselves regularly. She has also raised thousands of pounds for the charity through running marathons, and organising charity events. Her next challenge takes her and her husband Jon to Machu Picchu as part if the #FabulousChallenges campaign.

So we think Laura is absolutely fabulous! We want to support her with our exciting wedding dress auction night. Tickets are just £2 and can be bought through our website. All proceeds on the night will go to CoppaFeel! Come along, have some fun and raise money for a brilliant cause.

Dita Von Teese

The V&A Wedding Dress exhibition.

When we look back across the decades at high street fashions we see massive changes in styles. As we evolve our tastes in clothes change and the way we dress for work, nights out and every day occasions. Sometimes these changes take us by surprise; and we don’t often see our changes in tastes pouncing on us!

It comes as no surprise to see that the bridal industry is no different. Over the last 12 months alone shadow necklines and lace have been so popular with Amica Bridal Boutique brides, but we are seeing this start to evolve as tulle, fuller gowns and fishtails, with detailed backs begin to catch our eyes. Working in the bridal industry, all of this really excites us. We love seeing up and coming collections and styles that our brides fall in love with.

So when the opportunity came to visit the Wedding Dress Exhibition at the V&A Museum in London last month, we jumped at the chance to go. The exhibition begins with gowns from 1775 and displays more recent iconic gowns such as the Duchess of Cambridge’s civil ceremony attire. How the gowns of the 1700s have been kept in such excellent condition, we’ll never know, but these modest little dresses are so lovely to see! Tiny, both in height and width! And very simple. Depending on your status, would depend on whether you or members of your family wore this gown again and where.

Gowns get more elaborate through more recent decades. One of the most spectacular gowns of the exhibition was Margaret Whigham’s (the Duchess of Argyll) who married in 1933. The train of her gown was 18ft, with satin, silk, pearls and tulle. Apparently it took 30 seamstresses six weeks to make and cost…£52! SHOCKING (or at least the bride thought so at the time!)

The wide sleeve look for this gown, and long train influenced gowns for centuries.

Cute little accessories of feathers, fans and flowers evolve through the decades; through the classes, royalty and the elite…

In the 60s and 70s…daring gowns appeared! Short, fun, cute dresses and hats! Stylish chic that we’ve seen in so many family albums!

So what was our favourite?

One of the most fabulous dresses in exhibition had to be Kate Moss’. The simplicity of this boho style gown is made spectacular by all the hand sewn embroidery of gold thread and sequins that create Phoenix feathers around the skirt. Her 1920s inspired skull cap veil finished off the look beautifully. No photographs have ever done this justice.

Fay Tuft’s Love Story

Our lovely bride Fay married her fiancé Kyle on 2nd November 2013 wearing a stunning, one off dress by Jasmine.

Read all about Fay’s big day in her own words… We had our wedding at Wembury church. It is by the beach and as I am from Cornwall it was the perfect place to get married. Wembury beach is also the place where Kyle took me on Christmas Eve, got down on one knee (literally) and asked me to marry him. We love Wembury; we take our dogs for walks there all the time, Kyle has grown up going to the beach there and also want to get our children christened there so it had to be Wembury church.

The hair and beauty

I had French Shellac nail polish done at the fantastic Amica Bridal Boutique Pamper Room and absolutely adored them! I hardly ever do much with my hair and I never wear makeup so for my wedding day I wanted to keep it quite natural but still be special. I did my own makeup (which impressed my chief bridesmaid). I used all Rimmel London makeup and wore GHOST “Sweetheart” perfume on the day as Kyle and I chose special fragrances especially for the wedding. I had my hair cut, coloured and styled at Peace hair and beauty in Oreston. Kyle loves my hair down and curly and, as if I ever wear my hair down it is straight, I decided to go with the style he likes for our wedding.

The Dress

Amica Bridal Boutique was the first shop I went into on my hunt for a wedding dress and the dress I wore was the first dress I tried on. It is an ivory, dropped waist, sweetheart cut dress with a cathedral train and a diamante and pearl belt from the Jasmine collection. From the moment Amanda helped me into the dress I knew it was the one and after the alterations that were made by Tania it was perfect. I could not have been happier with my dress.

The Accessories

I had simple ivory satin heels for the day and ivory satin flats for the evening (having a second pair of shoes was such a good idea). I wore pearl jewellery as I had bought the bridal party and myself personalised pearl bracelets and I chose to wear a veil (but not over my face) as it is the only time in my life that I will get to so I thought why not. I also wore a diamante hair clip (that was my something old) and a blue garter (for my something blue).

I had two bridesmaids; my chief bridesmaid was my best friend, Hannah, who I have known ever since I can remember. She lives in Manchester now and when she came down the day before the wedding it was the first time I had seen her in over 5 years, and I also had my sister, Becky. I promised both of them when I was a little girl that they would be my bridesmaids and I intended to keep that promise. I also had Hannah’s 18 month old little girl as my flower girl; she looked absolutely adorable. I bought the two bridesmaids turquoise dresses and my flower girl’s white dress on eBay as with our budget we had to keep it quite cheap but they looked fantastic.

Kyle, my step-son Rhys, the best man James, my dad Marcus and my father-in-law Andy all wore matching black morning suits with an ivory waistcoat and a turquoise cravat. They hired from Stitches Tailoring in St-Judes. I even managed to find my three month old son Oliver a suit from Roco clothing.

Our stamp!

We chose a turquoise colour scheme with hints of aqua and teal. We didn’t want just one colour so that people could wear a range of shades without looking out of place. It worked really well. We wanted to keep the colours bright even though it was an autumn wedding. My mum decorated the reception for us (at 7am on the wedding day) and did an amazing job. The owner of the reception venue thought that my mum was a professional reception decorator and asked if she were decorating any other venues on the day.

Florals…

My mother-in-law Sarah did our flowers for us and they were beautiful. We went for calla lilies (which are my favourite flower) and also white roses. The bridesmaids and I had a bouquet of white roses with turquoise ribbons around the stems and the buttonholes were also white roses. We had calla lilies on the cake and in the fish bowls on the tables at the reception with glass nuggets and white rose candles. The fish bowls looked amazing with the candles lit during the evening reception; gave a lovely atmosphere.

The Ceremony

My favourite bit of the whole ceremony has to be when I walked in and saw Kyle. Walking down the aisle towards him and seeing the look on his face when he saw me has to be the best bit of the whole day. We both managed to keep our composure during the vows (just) but I nearly cried during the reading and Kyle got emotional during our hymn “Amazing Grace” but that song does have sentimental value to his family.

The Reception

We had our reception at The Staddy function centre in Plymstock. The wedding co-ordinator Julie was fantastic! If there was anything she could do to help the day go smoothly she would. We hired the house DJ and he was great, our first dance was Michael Bublé “The more I see you” and we sang to each other the whole way through. We also had a few pre-choreographed dances for the evening like, my favourite song by Kenny Loggins “Footloose”, LMFAO “Party rock anthem” and we even busted out moves from my childhood to S Club 7 “Reach”. It was the most fun ever!

Eats & Treats

We had two buffets; one for the day guests and a pasty supper for the evening guests (again, being from Cornwall it had to be done). My Mum and Nan made our cake for us. It had three tiers; a four and a half inch deep 11 inch fruit cake on the bottom (which proved difficult to cut and we enlisted support from the groom’s men), a triple layer 10 inch sponge in the middle and a triple layer 8 inch chocolate cake on top. My mum also found us some adorable personalised chocolates and she also did little favour bags with mints inside.

Our own handy work!

My mum and sister were amazing at helping me with all the stationary. My mum made all the invitations, order of services and place settings and my sister wrote everything out for us. My mum also helped me to make the table plan too. We kept it all very simple; all white with aqua organza ribbons and silver writing. It looked very clean and crisp and the fact that it all matched perfectly made it even better. Keeping it simple worked well.

Wise words

I can only say the age old cliché of “Enjoy the day”. It really does go so fast. After months of planning the day flies by and suddenly it’s the day after, you are married and it’s all over (and just beginning of course). Another piece of advice I can give is don’t worry about anyone but you and your new husband on your wedding day. I was so lucky to have such amazing people at my wedding who helped us with the children and even with a three month old baby I was still able to have the best day of my life without worrying about feed times and nappy changes.
